Ear Force PX4 from Turtle Beach is an amazing wireless headset that allows gaming, watching movies and listening to music in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. This wireless headset will give users a gaming advantage by experiencing superior and clear sound for hearing footsteps and gun battles for games like Call of Duty or Battlefield on PS4, PS3 or Xbox 360. It will also let users experience movies in a similar environment as a theater all through a headset. The Ear Force PX4 lets users enjoy gaming, movies and music comfortably through a realistic audio experience.

The reason to get the Ear Force PX4 is that Turtle Beach headsets have always been on the forefront of gaming for their audio technology and thirty-five years of audio experience. They are dedicated on providing the perfect gaming headset that delivers pristine audio, wireless functions, sound customization, and much more to improve the gaming experiences of their customers. Also, the best part is the Ear Force PX4 is one of the few fully compatible headsets available for the PS4 system.

Setup for PS4, PS3 and Xbox 360

In order for the Ear Force PX4 headset to receive audio wirelessly, it must be linked to the PX4 wireless transmitter. Setting up the PX4 headset onto my PS3 and Xbox 360 was extremely easy. All I had to do was plug in the PX4 wireless transmitter, hold down the pairing button on the transmitter until you see a blue light blinking rapidly. Then you hold the power button on the PX4 headset for about 6 seconds until you head 2 sets of double beeps. Once the blinking on the transmitter stops, it is done pairing and you should be able to head sound from the headset.

For the PS4, some extra steps were needed due to having some drop off with the received audio. This is fixed by changing some of the audio settings in the PS4 option menu. Here are the following instructions I found at the Turtle Beach website:

Start at PS4 home screen

  1. Go to Settings > Screen and Sound > Audio Output Settings > Primary Output Port
  2. Select “Digital Out” (OPTICAL)
  3. Select ONLY “Dolby Digital 5.1ch”
  4. Go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Output to Headphones
  5. Select “Chat Audio”
  6. Go to Settings > Sound and Screen > Audio Output Settings > Audio Format (Priority)
  7. Select “Bitstream (Dolby)”

Design and Comfort

The Ear Force PX4 is beautifully designed. It is mostly black with blue accent and matches the PS4 perfectly. Likewise, the buttons and adjustable wheels for specific controls on the headset are placed in well planned positions that are easily reached without having to directly look at. Also, the headset is made mostly of plastic yet it has enough weight and flexibility that it doesn’t possess a “cheap” feel.

The best part of the design is that the PX4 headset is extremely comfortable to wear. The three inch ear pads are thickly padded with highly graded breathable mesh ear cushions. The headbands are also very durable and flexible to fit around any head sizes. My head is above average size and the PX4 headset has a comfortable snug fit on me.

Due to the complex design and comfort, the PX4 headset is perfect for marathon gaming. I played six hours straight of COD: Ghost and I didn’t even notice the headset on top of my head. This has got to be one of the most comfortable headsets I have ever used.

Wireless Sound Quality

The surround sound quality of the Ear Force PX4 is wonderful compared to other headsets I have personally tested. It is due to Turtle Beach using dual band wireless technology to quickly find a clear channel to avoid any interference with other wireless electronics and deliver sound. By doing that, it ensures the headset receives crystal clear surround sound perfect for gaming, movies and music. I tested it and when I was using the PX4 for gaming, watching movies and listening to music, I obtained perfect wireless sound. It definitely allowed me to feel totally immersed into whatever I was listening to.

The Ear Force PX4 also allows users to customize the sounds to each person’s personal preference by allowing the use of the choices of digital optical/analog, surround on/off and different surround angles.

Digital Optical/Analog – The PX4 headset allows the choice of picking either digital optical or analog as your sound output. I tested both options and I easily choose the digital optical option. It allowed me to enjoy a better sound quality in general compared to the analog counterpart. It wasn’t really even competition. I guess Turtle Beach gave users another option just in case they didn’t have the choice of picking the digital optical output.

Surround Angle – The PX4 allows users to instantly change the angles of the surround sound into six different and unique positions virtually. By pressing the “surround angles” button on the PX4 wireless transmitter, it will instantly change the directions of sound coming into the ears. This made me smile endlessly for gaming due being able to accurately locate enemies from their footsteps. I suggest fiddling around with this option to find the perfect angle to suit your personally playing style.

Surround on/off – On the PX4 wireless transmitter, there is an on/off button to switch the surround sound on or off. This allows sound that wasn’t originally surround sound to be converted and allow the joy of a more dynamic and full audio experience. Also, when turning the surround sound off, I instantly notice games, movies and music to go completely flat and jumbled. Games, movies and music obviously become hard to enjoy. There is a big difference between having the surround sound on and off, and I clearly recommend having it on.

Tone – These headsets on default lacks a bit of bass for me. That is easily adjustable though by pressing the “Tone” button on the left side of the headset. By adjusting the Tone of the bass, I thoroughly enjoyed the sounds of explosions, gunfights and other loud noises more. Gaming just isn’t the same if the bass isn’t up to par. Luckily, this wonderful headset delivers.

Wireless Chat Quality

The chat function of the Ear Force PX4 is amazing as long as the chatting is done via Bluetooth. For the PS3 and Xbox 360, I connected the chatting function through Bluetooth and it works perfectly. I received crystal clear audio from other gamers and they heard me clearly as well. I can also easily adjust the chatting and microphone audio instantly.

Now for the PS4, the Bluetooth function for this headset is not yet compatible. This means that I have to use the PS4 chat cable and connect a long wire from my headset to the PS4 controller. I also lose the ability to adjust my chat and microphone audio instantly. This completely changes the meaning of wireless. This problem can easily be fixed by PlayStation with a systems patch. In spite of the negatives, the sound quality of the chatting is still crystal clear.

Battery Life

The Ear Force PX4 has a built-in rechargeable battery. This feature is probably one of my favorite. I do not enjoy constantly having to replace the batteries every time it dies for my other wireless headset. Also, it reads on the box that a full recharge should last about fifteen good hours of straight gaming. I believe a full recharge for the PX4s took me about an hour and a half to complete.

Although I have never played fifteen hours straight of pure gaming, I am sure there are some out there that has. So when the headset dies in the middle of gaming, I or anyone else can just connect the included eight feet charging cable and continue to play. The only downside to charging the headset while gaming is that I would get a light static sound being transmitted through the headset. The noise is endurable but still it’s definitely a negative in my eyes.

Overall Conclusion

For PS3 and Xbox 360 users, there are definitely other gaming headsets out there that can compete with the Ear Force PX4 on equal grounds when it comes to sound quality. Even so, the great aspect about the PX4 headset is that it is the best fully compatible wireless headset for the PS4 system due to limited choices. For that reason alone, it is worth the purchase.

Overall, I am thoroughly pleased at the Turtle Beach Ear Force PX4. It is an excellent headset to purchase for gaming purposes, as well as watching movies and listening to music. The headset sounds great, feels comfortable, compatible with multiple devices and easy to set up right out of the box. The PX4 headset is definitely worth the asking price. I highly recommend all PS4 users to get these headsets to enhance their future gaming experience.

Turtle beach sucks big elephant balls. I only had my px4 headsets for 6 months and my headsets will not turn on. I called turtle beach and they said I need 2 charge them which I did and still no power, the transmitter led light just blinks, these headsets are horrible! I will be buying the Astro a40.

I having the same problem the power don’t turn on

same here. I had just charged them turned them and turned them on. I turned them off for about 30 seconds, and when i tried to turn them on again they had stopped working. That is the last time I buy Turtle Beach. It was hard as hell to set these up and they are dead in under 9 months.

I have same problem. 6 months old and won’t turn on. Not happy

How to i connect the headset to bluetooth on older 360 or adjust other players voice volume?

Very crisp crisp sound. My only complaint is that the whole boxing seems rushed. It didn’t have any setup information for the ps4. So im glad that you provided that. Ohhh, and the batteries last forever! I think I used it a week straight before have to recharge it. That is crazy good. I don’t think any other headset can do that. I also bought one for my cousin because its so good.

Great product. The px4 has to be the best headset for the new generation of consoles. This is true especially for the ps4. I got the sony elites as a gift and threw those away after a week of use. I mean how pathetic is that? Sony needs to greatly increase their headsets for gamers if they want to compete. But again, these headsets saved me a lot of trouble from my neighbors.

These were so close to being the best headsets for the ps4 if the Bluetooth works. Do you know when its going to patch the system so it’ll work? I hate the wire that’s running from the headset to the controller. If I knew that I would of just went with a wired headset and save like $50 for a game or something.

If you find out the release date of the patch, keep me updated because I usually lurk around here from time to time.

Follow these instructions!
First, push the pair button on the transmitter till you see the off/on LED blink rapidly. Second, turn on the headset, till you hear a turn on sound, but don’t let go till you a second sounds that might sound weird. Then you should see the off/on button also blink rapidly which is good. Both transmitter and headset should blink rapidly. Let them pair themselves, till you see the transmitter go solid and the headset should blink every 3 seconds. By now you should’ve gotten sound on your headsets. It make take a second try to get it right. But it works, you can actually get the FULL SURROUND sounds instead of the crappy wire sounds on the controller that cuts of audio and dialog. Hope it works, cheers!

Yo, I cant believe that you enjoy a product from turtle beach. All of their products are horrible! Any real gamer knows that if you want a great gaming experience you have to go with the Astros since they are the best. I mean all the pro players uses Astros for a reason. You should do a review on a pair of Astros next man. Stay away from these turtle beach products.

Got these for Christmas and love them! I play killzone with these and the sound is absolutely perfect. Every time I game I would usually get headaches after 20mins but I didn’t get them with the px4s. I recommend everyone to get these if you have the same headaches problems as I do.

How do I adjust the mic volume for the ps4? I try everything but I cannot just figure it out. All my friends say that they can barely hear me even when the mic is touch my lips. Am I doing something wrong or is there a secret way to change the mic? I don’t want to change to a different headset if I don’t have to because the audio on these are awesomely godly. If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Reply

I’m sure you figured this out but on the left earphone on the outside there are two dials. The one at the back increases game volume and the one at the back increases your mic volume.

How big is your head? Cause mines is way above average and the previous gaming headsets I had was not comfortable at all. I tried the a40s and it’s an incredibly tight fit that at the end of my gaming sessions, I would get mad headaches. Im looking at the pictures and it doesn’t look that nice but as long as it has decent audio and fits my head, I would buy it.

The PX4 has got to be the cheapest piece of crap I have ever worn. I don’t care that the audio is good. I paid 150 for these and I expect to get quality made products. I should of just shell out an extra 50 and get the Astro gaming headsets. Turtle beach needs to totally step up their gaming headset quality.

I almost returned this headset if I didn’t read your review! When I first used it, I was like “this does not f-ing sound like surround sound at all!” and then I saw your setup info and changed my audio output settings from linear to bitstream dolby and it worked like magic. I hear footsteps too good now with amplify its scary. Thanks for the help bro. You saved me the trouble of having to return it to amazon.

I got the headset and it worked alright at first but I keep getting static through the earcups. I thought the dual band function of the headset was supposed to get rid of it but I still hear interference. It does not work as advertised so it’s going back to the store. I should of just went with Astros to begin with.

Reply

Hey. I had the same issue with my PX4’s. The headset just has to be switched on (doesnt have to be connected to the transmitter) and there is a static noise that is constantly played. Do you think this is a hardware issue or are all PX4’s like this?

Reply

When chatting with the headset on do you hear yourself a little in the headset? Im having a problem with my current headset Sony Elites that I canot hear myself so i tend to talk louder than I should. I have had one online gamer tell me that when he talks his mic pics his voice up so he can have a good level of talking. Im waking my wife up when I play online and I want these to hopefully let me talk softer

I don’t have that problem with the px4.

Reply

there is a mic monitor dial on the forward most part of the left ear cup above where the mic rests if you turn that up then you will be able to hear yourself how loud you want it depends on your preference

ok i have a 360 slim and everytime i hook in the adepatr it switches it back to av and not hdmi i get sound and nuthing but black screen and av and hdmi are hooked up

I guess they will be released wodrwlide. But I haven’f found them on the uk amazon page but they are available on the german amazon page. The problem with the headset is that most retailers don’t have them for preorder. The only retailer is amazon and they sell the headset over the recommended retail price.

Ohhh those px4 looking very nice. Im searching for some good headset for my new ps4 and these looks perfect for me. The color scheme even matches the ps4. Very nice and thought out. And woah! 15 hours of playtime on this headset is crazy good. I don’t even game that much but if I get this headset I might want to just see if it last 15 straight hours of gaming.

There’s one word that describes the px4 and its “solid”. It did everything I wanted it to do. It gave me solid surround sounds, solid chatting, solid setup and just solid in general. It is a bit overpriced though. I mean if it weren’t the only fully compatible headset on ps4 launch day, I wouldn’t even have considered it. But no regrets here. I could even return it still if I choose to. But its solid enough to where I’ll just keep it.

Reply

It’s sad but the ear force px4 seems better than the sony pulse elite that was specifically made for the ps4 by playstation. And the sony pulse elite wasn’t even fully compatible. I returned those and never looked back. Judging from the comments, this px4 headset might be my next choice to test. Might as well, since I don’t have a headset to use right now.

how do you connect the digital optical cable if you’re using a monitor and hdmi cable not the scart lead the xbox 360 comes with? or does it not need the digital optical cable?

Reply

Only if you want the 7.1 surround sound.

Reply

I only got this headset because it was the only headset that worked with the ps4 but I had nothing but trouble with the audio ever since purchasing it. this went straight back to best buy where I brought it

Great review! Appreciate the info. I’m a female gamer and got these to get my advantage over the boys I play with. It really does show a difference on gameplay with these headset and not. My k/d ratio goes up dramatically with the amplify perk. I hear them from miles away and I’m not even exaggerating. And when I play without the headset, its just so different. I really agree with everything you say Nathan.

Reply

Its really comfortable. I wore it for over 10 hours straight and I feel no discomfort whatsoever. I am pretty hardcore with my gaming and these headset is great for my budget. The sound and chat is just what I needed to play my games.

Reply

By the look of it, the px4 seems incredible. I might get the px4 for my ps4 when I save up enough. Im using the default one ear phone that came with the ps4 and it sucks so much. I don’t even want to use it but my clan requires it for cod ghost. So, I can’t wait until I get these bad boys and listen to them footsteps and wreck shit up.

Reply

Man, I bought these but after setting everything up, the Bluetooth doesn’t work! Wtf man, I don’t want a stinking wire going from my controller to my headset. I mean isn’t that the whole purpose of it being “wireless”. But you say that it just requires a patch from psn for the Bluetooth on the px4 to work. If that’s true, I will be a bit disappointed. As far as the sound goes, its great. Chat is good, sound is great and Bluetooth sucks.

I bought these for my boyfriend for his gaming and only use it sometimes for listening to music and watching movies since we live in apartments and don’t want to bother the neighbors. Overall I think it does an okay job. I definitely used better. My sister has a pair from sennheiser and those are amazing!! The sound quality that comes out of those is, in my opinion, better. Im a little disappointed because I heard that Turtle Beach is a popular brand. But oddly enough, my boyfriend loves the px4, so maybe it just depends on the person wearing it.

Reply

I came to the same conclusion after using the px4 with my games and movies. The quality is amazing. I had low hopes since I also have the x12 from turtle beach and those sucks. The only reason I even tried turtle beach again after my horrible experience with the x12 is that it was the only fully compatible headset to work with the ps4 on launch day. I’m happy to see that turtle beach step up their game and deliver something acceptable. The only thing I don’t like is that all the plastic feels crazy cheap. Although it might not be true, but I feel like it’ll snap if I put too much pressure on it.

I was only planning on using the px4 until other headsets from better brands come out but this really exceeded my expectation. I might just stick with these and save some money.

Reply

I highly recommend the px4 headset to everyone that wants a great almost wireless headset for games. I noticed that it requires a chat cable to be connected to the controller for chat to work. But I rarely talk to anyone on psn so it’s pretty a non factor for me. So I guess these are completely wireless for me on the ps4. But just the sound quality alone should make you buy this. It’s my first quality headset, and I already love it. I am pretty sure everyone else would too.

The only complaint I have for the px4 is that the instructions were missing some crucial information. Seemed like it was made before the ps4 even came out. So if you want full instructions for connecting to the ps4 you would have to go to the main site or read this review.
